The 26-year-old victim died after he was shot in his car during the ‘unprecedented’ London riots.

He was discovered at 9.15pm last night and was admitted to hospital, where he died today.

The Metropolitan Police’s Operation Trident are responsible for the investigation.

Mike Fisher, Croydon Council’s leader, said he believed the cost of the rioting in south London could run into millions of pounds.

He said he thought the violence was carried out by a ‘small minority of people’, many of whom were not from Croydon.

‘This is a mindless minority of thugs who think it is acceptable to cause damage, to steal goods and property just because they want to.

‘What we have seen on an unprecedented and unparalleled level is looting and arson of those buildings, some of which have been burnt to the ground,’ Mr Fisher added.

Tonight, there are expected to be up to 16,000 police officers on the streets of London, following the riots which have spread across the capital to other parts of the country, including Birmingham and Bristol.

The England vs Holland football match has also been called off tomorrow.

After a discussion with the FA, the Met decided to cancel the friendly, which was due to take place at Wembley.
