It may look at first like this scooter rider is simply trying to negotiate his way through a busy High Street.

But once it becomes clear the rider was weaving his way through a crowd of looters in Croydon last week, the outcome is sickeningly predictable.

Seconds after being spotted, the learner rider is dragged from his scooter by a thuggish gang at the peak of last week’s breakdown of law and order – before another thief makes off with the vehicle.

Before the disturbances these were businesses and homes, with one having survived two World Wars.

But after ransacking stores the rioters gleefully set properties alight, cheering at their handiwork as they saw flames engulf the buildings.

Their actions have left not only charred shells where homes and livelihoods used to stand, but also a deep scar on England’s streets.

Shonola Smith, 22, from South Norwood, South London, sobbed as she was jailed for six months after admitting trying to steal from an Argos store in Croydon.

The model was caught outside the store and arrested on the spot, along with her sister, Alicia, and their 22-year-old friend Donness Bissessar.

She only moved from Poland to join her sister in London in March

She came to the UK just a few months ago, hoping for a better life.

But when marauding yobs set her street on fire, Monika Konczyk had to fight for her very survival.

The image of her jumping from her first floor flat as flames tore through the building became an iconic image of the riots.

Terrified, fearing she was going to die, the 32-year-old shop assistant from Poland was paralysed until her sister Beata screamed at her to jump the 16 feet to the street below.

He was discovered at 9.15pm last night and was admitted to hospital, where he died today.
