David Cameron today announced Parliament will be recalled for a day to consider the riots which have swept across the country.

The Prime Minister returned from his Italian holiday overnight as the violence in London spread to other cities.

MPs will meet on Thursday to discuss the trouble – and the PM vowed the Government would do “everything necessary to restore order to Britain’s streets and to make them safe for the law abiding”. Continue reading →

They have been accused of a sluggish response to last nights riots, standing back and watching looters destroy shops and taking a softly-softly approach.

But today, when the Metropolitan Police had a chance to identify scores – if not hundreds – of thugs and looters, they released just 12 grainy CCTV photographs of people ‘we will be speaking to’.

As scenes of wanton violence and looting shocked the world, viewers should at least have been comforted by the fact that so many of the rioters had failed to conceal their identity and would swiftly be reported to officers

The number of police officers on London’s streets tonight trying to prevent further rioting and looting is almost being

After police were vastly outnumbered on Monday night with just 6,000 officers on patrol amid “sickening” scenes of violence, the Prime Minister announced the increase in Downing Street.

All Metropolitan Police leave has been cancelled and special constables have been asked to work.

Reinforcements are being provided by 26, or 60%, of the country’s other forces, and even retired Met officers are offering to help out.

Sky’s crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the Met was considering a change of tactics and that officers may even be issued with plastic bullets. Continue reading →
